Construction on what is now Whitehall-Yearling High School began in 1952 and was completed in 1953. The first class of one hundred twenty eight graduated in 1958. For the last sixty years Whitehall-Yearling High School has been the cornerstone of education in the Whitehall Community. We have a rich tradition of academic excellence. We have a history of accomplishment in the arts, music, and sports. We have a tradition of serving the children and the broader community of Whitehall by offering a wide range of academic, social, and athletic opportunities to all.
Whitehall-Yearling High School is a diverse community that offers a wide range of opportunities for our students to excel. Each year WYHS seniors garner thousands of dollars in academic scholarships to help them further their education. Each year WYHS athletes receive scholarships to reward their accomplishments on the playing fields. In our classrooms we offer a variety of coursework to prepare our students for the world of work and for further academic endeavors. Courses are taught by an outstanding team of caring professional educators who have dedicated themselves to helping the students of WYHS achieve excellence. Many of our teachers are Whitehall-Yearling High School graduates who have chosen to give back to the community in which they were reared. We have an active music department that includes an outstanding instrumental music program. Our marching and concert bands participate in many shows, contests, and other performances each year. Students who participate get the opportunity to travel and meet students from many parts of the country. Our excellent choirs (we have five of them) also participate in many activities and performances that broaden their experience. The show choir performs in many venues each year and many of their members participate in the annual WYHS Theater Department’s Spring Musical. The theater department is another strong area that allows Whitehall students to express their creativity. Each of our departments has a section here to show a wide range of offerings for our students. Whitehall-Yearling students can choose from honors and advanced placement in a number of academic disciplines. Whitehall students also participate in post secondary enrollment option courses, which not only broaden their academic horizons, but give them college credits at no cost to their families.
Athletics
The Whitehall Yearling Athletics Department is very proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes both on and off the fields of play. The athletics department offers the opportunity to participate in sixteen varsity sports. We have over 360 young men and women playing on our teams. We believe that athletics provides our student-athletes a learning environment outside the classroom setting. Through athletics our students learn the importance of sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, dedication, pride and humility that will apply not only to their athletic endeavors, but to their lives. The athletics department has many coaches, volunteers, boosters and staff that make our programs work for kids. Importantly, our community and our students support the student-athletes and help perpetuate the pride we have in the storied tradition of Whitehall-Yearling High School athletics.
Welcome to Whitehall-Yearling High School
WYHS is a school that is working very hard to become the best school for all of our students. We are a learning community of over nine hundred students, staff, and administrators who are all working toward the goal, “ to provide opportunities for success through a shared commitment to excellence.” This is our mission. All of us at WYHS are working diligently toward this goal.
We provide many opportunities for students to get involved in community service through our Key Club and through our successful Senior Service Projects. In addition we have many students and staff who are involved in a variety of projects that help improve the quality of life for members of our school community and the broader community of Whitehall. Each year for example we sponsor a food drive that provides large quantities of food for needy members of the Whitehall community.
At WYHS students participate in a wide variety of athletic activities that help them stay healthy in mind and body. These activities are well attended by the Whitehall Community which is very supportive of WYHS students.
Our faculty is well trained and works to help children fulfill their potential. All of our staff engage in regular professional development and many further their education in order to be better prepared to teach our students.
At a time when every young person faces the prospect of an increasingly complex world of work WYHS is establishing programs that will prepare our students to make positive contributions and improve their prospects of entering jobs that are fulfilling in all areas of their lives.
During the past year we have made a number of changes to the physical plant at the high school designed to make it a more attractive place to work in and a place that makes learning more efficient. In order to keep up with the technology that is driving the future we have added a number of new computer labs and have upgraded the equipment to make it easier for our students to develop these most important skills.
The students, staff, and administration of Whitehall-Yearling High School welcome the participation of parents and members of the community in helping us provide a high quality education for the young people of Whitehall.
